Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) is a fertility treatment that involves placing sperm directly into a woman’s uterus to facilitate fertilization. This procedure is often recommended for couples experiencing infertility due to issues such as low sperm count, decreased sperm mobility, unexplained infertility, or cervical mucus problems. 

The IUI process begins with a thorough evaluation of both partners. The woman may undergo ovulation-stimulating medications to increase the chances of releasing multiple eggs, which enhances the probability of fertilization. The timing of the IUI is critical and is synchronized with the woman’s ovulation cycle. Ovulation is usually monitored through ultrasound and hormonal testing to determine the optimal time for insemination.

On the day of the IUI, a semen sample is collected from the male partner or a donor. This sample undergoes a process called sperm washing, where it is treated to remove impurities and select the most motile and healthy sperm. This concentrates the sperm, enhancing the chances of successful fertilization.

During the IUI procedure, the woman lies on an examination table, and a speculum is inserted into the vagina to visualize the cervix. A thin, flexible catheter is then threaded through the cervix and into the uterus. The washed sperm is gently injected through the catheter. The procedure is relatively quick, usually taking only a few minutes, and is generally painless, although some women may experience mild cramping.

After the procedure, the woman may rest for a short period before resuming normal activities. Pregnancy can be confirmed about two weeks after the IUI through a blood test.

IUI is less invasive and less expensive compared to other fertility treatments like In Vitro Fertilization (IVF). However, its success rates vary, depending on factors such as the woman’s age, the underlying cause of infertility, and the quality of the sperm. For many couples, IUI represents a valuable step in the journey toward achieving pregnancy.
